As with all vagabonds, Kuo-Wei Lin's home is exile, an apparently contradictory state of alienation and proximity which is present in his work. Currently living in Berlin, Germany, this artist weaves a patchwork of influences, cultures, and incidents of daily life as he travels and learns. Although accomplished in many fields including photography and sculpture, he is not a specialist of form or sophisticated technique, but someone who tries to understand the odd in the ordinary, and the insignificant in the monumental. What is strange about all that is common?
How do we interact with this world? Kuo-Wei Lin combines the objects and the spaces that he finds to draw the spectator into questioning the present, he estranges our everyday, producing artefacts from trees, (Human Bonsai, 07 installation, New Cross, London) postcards, city centres or country roads and illicit dumps. Decoding and reconstructing the present, understanding an environment begins with identifying the exceptional, and making possible a novel interaction with it.
‘You’re not doing the art but you’re composing the situation.’ David Hammons and so Kuo-Wei Lin is rigorous in his analysis, likewise ‘the less I do the more of an artist I am’ he believes in the existence of a work-spectator relation which may be beyond the presence of an artist, or an artist as an exile from a mediatic relation which he made possible.
